About Us

Biscayne Bay Waterkeeper (BBWK) is a grassroots not-for-profit organization dedicated to identifying issues and promoting action-based solutions and community engagement to ensure swimmable, fishable, drinkable water in Biscayne Bay and its surrounding watershed. Launched in January 2011 BBWK became the first Waterkeeper organization in South Florida. BBWK joined an international network of 200 Waterkeeper Alliance organizations worldwide. Each Waterkeeper organization is autonomous, self-funded, and guided by the needs of their local watershed, yet adheres to a set of guideline principles common to all Waterkeepers. Waterkeeper Alliance is a global movement of on-the-water, grassroots advocates who patrol and protect over 100,000 miles of rivers, streams and coastlines in North and South America, Europe, Australia, Asia and Africa.

It is the mission of BBWK to defend, protect, and preserve the aquatic integrity of the Biscayne Bay watershed through citizen involvement and community action. The current sewage infrastructure initiative is an opportunity to connect South Floridians to their water, and highlight key issues in how South Floridians relate to their water on a daily basis.
