Among the many mysteries that have vexed scientists about the ongoing Zika epidemic is the question of how, in pregnant women, the virus manages to cross the maternal-fetal barrier.

A woman’s body is usually quite good at protecting her growing baby. There are biological blockades to prevent the transmission of viruses to a fetus through the bloodstream, by way of the placenta; the same path for the nutrients and oxygen that sustain a developing baby.

Biscayne Nat'l Park Mgmt Meetings Scheduled in December 2013

Your voice is needed at upcoming public meetings to tell park managers that they must take stronger action to protect park resources and that a marine reserve is necessary to protect Biscayne National Park’s endangered coral reef ecosystems.

Coral reef health and fish populations in Biscayne National Park have been on the decline for decades due to over-fishing and over-use, leaving some species populations on the verge of collapse. Newly proposed updates to the park’s management plan fail to protect these incredible natural resources--and we need your help!

Join NPCA in our efforts to create a “no-take” marine reserve that would prohibit fishing in areas where the park’s unique coral reef habitat is severely threatened. Marine reserves provide protection for entire coral reef ecosystems and their inhabitants while also providing valuable recreational opportunities for snorkelers and divers.

November 20, 2013 - Give Miami Day - the day to make your donations count the most!

On 12/12/12, the inaugural Give Miami Day sparked a movement that had never been tested in our community before. Almost 5,000 donors gave more than $1.2 million to 300 nonprofit organizations that tirelessly serve Greater Miami. In 2013, we will take that spark and reignite the new, philanthropic Miami.

Anti-fracking petition

The Florida Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) has given the go-ahead to Dan A. Hughes Co., a Texas-based oil and gas exploration company, to drill an exploratory well and a wastewater injection well in Naples in a spot that's close to a residential neighborhood, the primary water source for Naples, the Florida Panther National Wildlife Refuge, and the western Everglades.

This drilling could easily destroy Florida's ecology, agriculture, and, yes tourism.

If you wish to protect Florida and our environment, here is a petition you can sign to make your voice heard:
